Marco Berger – 2009 – Argentina
Slightly soapy but genuine and unpretentious Argentine film about an unusual love-triangle. In an attempt to get back (or back at) his ex-girlfriend, Bruno decides to break up her new relationship by befriending and seducing her boyfriend, Pablo. Naturally, when emotions get involved things aren’t always so clear-cut, and Bruno and Pablo begin to fall in love. It develops in much the same way as would happen in any Hollywood film, but what makes this one interesting is not only the element of bisexuality but seeing it play out without all of the cynical emotion triggers that most romantic-drama films use to make everyone in the audience feel the same things at the same time. Here, it’s possible to side with either one of the characters, or to simply find the whole situation absurd, or be delighted by it. In any case, the characters behave like real people, without much eloquence or foresight, and are able to adapt to situations rather than demand the programmed resolution their counterparts in American movies always get.
