Humanoids from the Deep

Barbara Peeters - 1980 - USA

It developed a modest cult following fairly quickly, but this is mostly because it was calculated to do so.  It is no less silly and shameless than some of Roger Corman’s other productions since the 50s, but it suffers from a post-modern self-consciousness that – (though it amuses fans) – turned me off.  A small budget doesn’t necessitate an ironic smirk to plead for audience sympathy; the same money and energy can also be used to make a truly effective thriller – (just ask George Romero).  In any case, the film is more fun than scary and this is plenty for some viewers.  Oh yes, the plot concerns genetically mutated amphibians eager to reproduce with the nubile females of a waterfront fishing community.  The only genuine laugh occurs when a dummy’s eyes continue to move even after its ventriloquist has been killed, with absolutely no explanation, supernatural or otherwise.
