Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man

Ruggero Deodato – 1976 – Italy

Before attaining notoriety for his horror films, Ruggero Deodato directed one of the best films of the poliziotteschi genre; (violent Italian crime films about cops and gangsters).  It is famous, and beloved, for its disjointed plot and shameless exploitation elements.  Genre mainstays Marc Porel and Ray Lovelock team up as a pair of inseparable hotshot detectives who not only live together, but ride around on the same motorcycle and – (presumably as evidence against understandable gay rumors) – take turns sexually harassing and bedding the same women.  The plot’s a little inscrutable, but the film works well enough anyway as a succession of mean action set-pieces; by far the most famous of which is the intense opening motorcycle chase through the streets of Rome.
