I didn’t care for any of the previous entries in the series, so I can’t say that this one is particularly worse, though that would be my guess. Hack Rob Marshall takes over the series (from Gore Verbinski) by doing a hack’s job; i.e. contributing no artistic/dramatic improvements whatsoever – (not that Verbinksi set an especially high standard). If anything, this film made me as sure as ever that Disney’s producers and writers made a huge mistake in pursuing a comic/supernatural angle for the franchise, as true fans would have been infinitely happier with a straight adventure in the vein of Disney’s own Treasure Island (1950) and Kidnapped (1960).
