Obviously
intended as a progressively modern romantic comedy for the 90s, Three of Hearts gets points for its risqué
subject but overall fails to get past all the usual clichés of the genre, or at
least to deal with them in unique ways.
Bisexual Sherilyn Fenn breaks up with her girlfriend Kelly Lynch, who in
turn hires male prostitute William Baldwin as part of a scheme to get her
back. Since it’s not possible that Fenn
and Baldwin will not end up falling in love instead, there is virtually no
suspense possible in this situation.
There’s a whole subplot about Baldwin and his pimp (Joe Pantoliano)
having trouble with underworld characters, but it all seems kind of vague and
irrelevant to the story. Generally it’s
a light movie that’s pleasant enough but nothing special. I always had this movie confused in my mind
with Threesome (1994), which came out
around the same time and co-starred another ex-Twin Peaks girl (Lara Flynn Boyle) with a different Baldwin brother
(Stephen) in a story about a polysexual love triangle. No special relevance there; just an
odd coincidence.
