Wing Commander

Chris Roberts – 1999 – USA

Trying to mix the satiric melodrama of Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers (1997) with the loose spirituality of Star Wars doesn’t work so well for director Chris Roberts in Wing Commander.  It’s not awful, but it's just nothing special, feeling like a weaker re-hash of things we’ve seen quite often in better and worse science-fiction movies.  It’s the kind of thing that was probably only green-lighted because star (and pretty-boy flavor-of-the-month) Freddie Prinze, Jr. expressed interest in it; otherwise it would’ve been a straight-to-video deal starring Stephen Baldwin or Richard Grieco.  Surprisingly, the effects aren’t bad overall, but the costumes for the reptilian-cat-monster bad guys are completely laughable; (they’d’ve been better not seen at all).
