Bookies is kind of an okay but mostly forgettable comedy/drama about three college roomies who get the genius idea to become… bookies! Naturally, everything’s awesome for a while until some local gangsters start to wonder where all their business has gone. It might’ve worked better as a full-on comedy, but as it is, the constant ponderous narration makes it seem more like Scorsese’s GoodFellas or Casino, except nothing all that remarkable ever happens. We certainly don’t feel that anyone’s life is ever really in danger. The only thing that makes the film somewhat interesting is the cast of quirky actors in the lead roles; Nick Stahl, Johnny Galecki and Lukas Haas, except even here they don’t get to do much, and they probably only ended up in it because several rounds of A-list actors turned it down. No offense to them, of course, as I’d rather see them in a movie than most A-listers, but unfortunately that still doesn’t make this movie any better.
