This movie Cutback is artless, patronizing Christian
propaganda, which would be forgivable only if there was a shred of cinematic
validity in it, and there isn’t. It was
made by religious people. I only watched
it because there was surfing in it, and even that’s hard to enjoy when a skill
for it is portrayed not as a sport but as – in the words of the hero’s mother –
“a gift from God.” The message of the
movie – (and movies like this are all about the message) – seems to be that if you claim
to have turned your life over to Jesus, He makes you surf good.
