Taboo

Max Makowski - 2002 - USA

Really one of the most idiotic movies I’ve ever seen; totally derivative of trendy teen thrillers but without any kind of unique slant nor anything interesting in its style or direction to make the clichés less grating.  A group of snotty rich kids gather in someone’s mansion during a storm and play some kind of anonymous truth game.  Well, a year later, they’re getting knocked off Agatha Christie-style during a reunion, each according to the sin they confessed to in the game.  Or are they?  Your eyes won’t stop rolling as one ridiculous “twist” trips over the next in a convoluted who-done-it format that builds to a big revelation that’s totally underwhelming.  Even one of my favorite actors, Nick Stahl, can’t make anything good out of this material.  It’s one of those movies where you spend more time wondering who could possibly have green-lighted it, and why, than paying attention to the plot.  Usually a movie this unoriginal and boring only gets made if there are big stars in it to sucker people into the theater; so what’s the deal here?
