Excellent documentary done just right; made when its
subject, Rudolf Nureyev, was at the height of his fame, and smart enough to simply
observe rather than comment. There is minimal
narration and little material beyond the immediate reality of Nureyev in
endless rehearsal. Interspersed with
these scenes are clips from final performances with Nureyev and famous partners
like Lynne Seymour and Margot Fonteyn.
Not quite part of the ‘direct cinema’ school, I Am a Dancer is nevertheless a very intimate and effectively
simple portrait of an artist at work.
