Feeding Frenzy is
a mega-low-budget independent film made from scratch by Wisconsin
filmmakers Mike Stoklasa and Jay Bauman, who are minor celebrities because of
their hilarious and in-depth movie reviews produced under the banner Red Letter
Media. Highly knowledgeable and
talented, they have elevated the amateur webcam rant into something much more
polished and commanding. I highly
recommend both their standard review show Half
in the Bag and especially their feature-length reviews of the Star Wars prequel trilogy for an
entertaining and insightful critique of George Lucas’ career. Feeding
Frenzy is an homage the 80s critter craze in horror movies that was kicked
off by Gremlins (1984). The mysterious Mr. Plinkett (Rich Evans), (a
recurring character in the Red Letter Media universe), owns a hardware store
and seems to have spawned a small army of sharp-toothed creatures that attack
everyone in sight. It is up to meek
employee Jesse (Ron Lipsky) to save the day.
Stoklasa and Bauman specialize in a very dark sense of humor, which I
happen to enjoy, and I liked the film in spite of, or maybe because of, its
minimal production values. It doesn’t
really build to anything substantial, or end with a bang, rather than sort of
run of steam (or money), but it’s still very entertaining.
