Allen Hughes – 2013 – USA
Humdrum script that was shopped around and eventually able
to latch onto some big names like Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe and Catherine
Zeta-Jones, all without anyone with any particular vision taking charge of
it. It’s the kind of property that screenwriters
knock out as deliberately bland potboilers for hack directors and actors to work
on in exchange for some easy paychecks.
There’s an intriguing subtext of homophobia running through the film but
it doesn’t really go anywhere or add anything to the whole, except possibly as
an example of men having to act like men in the public arena. Not horrible but nothing special at all.
