Nicolas Winding Refn
– 2013 – Denmark
Spring Breakers comes to mind along with Nicolas Winding
Refn’s films when I try to articulate a phenomenon I’ve slowly become aware of
in the last few years. There are some
movies where I feel like I’m staring at cinematography instead of watching
cinema. And yes, there is a
difference. Films like this make me feel
that the world is in danger of being taken over by DP’s while directors retreat
into a role comparable to what they enjoy in TV, which is essentially little
more than reminding actors where to stand.
Aside from that, Only God Forgives
deserves to be judged on its own terms and not be punished for falling into
a category with other films that have annoyed me. It’s all right.
