Evan
Goldberg & Seth Rogan – 2014 – USA
This really must be one of the worst
films of the year. The only reason I
can’t say so decisively is because I see so few films. I didn’t laugh once. James Franco is an actor I’ve always liked a
lot, but he is not funny, and when he deliberately tries to yuk it up, he’s
even less funny. Seth Rogan phones in
another of his awkward-hip-befuddled-chubby-guy roles. His go-to laugh-getter always seems to
involve the removal of his clothes. Not
a bad premise at all, and in the right hands it could have been a biting satire
more along the lines of Tropic Thunder (2007)
or The Dictator (2012), but as it is,
it’s just embarrassingly unfunny and uninteresting; not remotely worth all the
brouhaha surrounding it at the epicenter of the Sony hacking scandal.
