John
Landis’ take on the oft-told tale of corpse-procurers Burke and Hare in 19th
century Scotland is played strictly for dark comedy, with Simon Pegg and Andy
Serkis in the lead roles, plus Tom Wilkinson as their infamous customer
Professor Knox, who needs the bodies for dissection in his anatomy studies. There’s a definite Gilliam-esque quality to
the production design and overall air of zaniness amid depressing squalor. Octogenarian genre icons Christopher Lee and
Ray Harryhausen make brief cameos.
