Voyage Around the World Under the Sea

Andrew Marton – 1966 – USA

Preposterous underwater adventure film from producer Ivan Tors, but it’s so silly and colorful that you kind of just go along with it as long as you don’t have any expectations of realistic depictions of science, geography and human relationships.  Tors, who had a great interest in promoting oceanography and zoology in his productions, brought together the stars of his two hit TV shows, Lloyd Bridges of Sea Hunt and Brian Kelly of Flipper, and threw in that little yellow submarine from Flipper for good measure too.  A group of scientists and divers are sent on a mission around the world to plant sensors on the ocean floors designed to warn us of imminent natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.  While bland and brawny Bridges and Kelly try to outdo each other’s heroic stances and shirt-peeling skills, some of the supporting cast is actually pretty interesting, mainly Keenan Wynn as a misanthropic recluse and David McCallum as an egghead genius out strictly for personal gain.  The sole woman on board is Shirley Eaton, the golden girl herself from Goldfinger (1964).
