The Last House on the Beach

Franco Prosperi – 1978 – Italy

Italian exploitation movies of the 70s were a special breed, filled with every blasphemy and depravity anyone could think up, blessedly free of the political correctness that censored movies from the 80s on.  It was all in good fun – the world didn’t fall apart; and audiences only became more prudish in the long run.  Bearing the ridiculous title ‘The Last House on the Beach’ for no other reason than to cash in on the success of the American horror film Last House on the Left, this film brilliantly fuses the home-invasion and ‘nun-sploitation’ sub-genres.  Sister Cristina (Florinda Bolkan) escorts a handful of girls for a weekend at a beach house, only to be disturbed by a trio of bank-robbers on the lam.  The leader is blonde, baby-faced Ray Lovelock, whose looks and charm blind the girls to his truly sadistic nature.  The longsuffering Cristina must decide whether to ride out the storm or take action to save her charges.  Like the best of this genre, the film is not just disposable and artless; it has a definite style that makes the unpleasant goings-on tolerable.
