Michael Chapman – 2011 – USA
Awkwardly directed and acted, this melodrama about the pros and cons of religious conviction somehow remains engaging enough to tolerate, mostly thanks to the refreshing modesty of the scenario and presentation. Yes, there is the requisite gimmick, gradually revealed – (man forced to jump off building to prove his love for the wife of a wacko born-again Christian) – but even this seems less offensive than it is in almost every A-list movie. Good cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson and Terrence Howard. Major weakness is the patronizing treatment of its anti-religious agenda. While I don’t disagree with the overall theme, there needs to be a better plan than merely portraying people of faith as bigoted, mentally-deranged hypocrites.
