I could be getting stupider or just easier-to-please in my
old age but I never thought I’d say that superhero movies were actually
getting better than worse. Let’s face
it; they were never all that brilliant in the first place, but in some of the
recent comic-book movies it seems like the mold has finally been perfected, and
so here they come, rolling off the assembly line; Iron Man, Thor, X-Men:
First Class, etc. Chris Evans plays
the uber-patriotic hero of the title who is chosen – (due to his exceptional
moral quality) – for an Army medical experiment during World War II that will
help win the war. Sure, this is a little
insulting to the real armed forces if you think about it, but you’re obviously
not supposed to think about it too much.
Hugo Weaving and Toby Jones play the villain and his henchman,
continuing a key requisite of the new films; putting quality actors in
the supporting roles even when the main heroes remain fairly bland pretty-boys. Film can also be seen as something of a
companion piece to director Johnston’s equally flag-waving WWII-era superhero
movie of 20 years ago, The Rocketeer.
