This is one of the Hammer studio’s occasional detours away
from horror and suspense films in the 60s.
While not a real success or terribly popular, I admire the film as
evidence that Hammer was concerned with a variety of genre films, not merely
the monster movies that paid the bills. Sword of Sherwood Forest is also unique
among Hammer films in that it is based on a TV series that had already been
running in the UK for the previous five years.
Richard Greene (who plays Robin Hood) is the only cast member who
returns from the show, which is odd since – (in this film, anyway) – he is
easily the weakest link. That’s a big
liability but the film almost compensates for it with its vibrant photography
and the presence of Peter Cushing as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Oliver Reed also appears in a small role as
one of the villain’s henchmen.
