Lockout

James Mather & Stephen St. Leger – 2012 – France

Although it’s a pretty blatant rip-off of John Carpenter’s Escape from… movies, without even a word of thanks in the credits, Lockout isn’t bad as far as recent space adventure films go.  It benefits greatly from the fact that it features Guy Pearce in an action-hero role rather than anyone from the usual line-up of 2nd-tier stars whom no doubt were asked first.  The main plot – (cynical super-crook on a suicide mission to rescue the president’s daughter from marauding psychos in exchange for his freedom) – is all fine, but what really sinks the film, in my view, is a pointless, tacked-out conspiracy sub-plot that guarantees a twist-ending and unneeded multiple climaxes.  I hate that.
