Slight but cute 80s comedy, (with a TV-movie feel), featuring young Keanu Reeves and Lori Loughlin as high schoolers who head out for the prom and end up having the worst date ever. Reeves does his patented stoner routine that he put to such good use in everything from Rivers Edge (1986) and Permanent Record (1988) to the sleeper hit Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) and the quintessential early 90s American indie film, Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho (1991). The basic premise - (geeky slacker with an out-of-his-league girlfriend and who has no memory of some serious partying the night before) - re-appeared, of course, more famously but less endearingly in Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000). It’s nothing phenomenal but a pleasant date movie, especially for any partial to 80s nostalgia, and with a good share of genuine laughs that make it worthwhile.
