Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

Troy Nixey – 2010 – USA

It seems like you could have a lot of fun with a plot about tiny evil troll-like creatures living in the basement furnace of a huge country estate, but this film doesn’t take much advantage of the notion.  It would’ve made a lot more sense to have the child delighted with the creatures up front instead of just terrified throughout.  There are a few good scenes, but despite the attempt to provide a ton of new backstory on the creatures, the film ultimately isn’t much better than the 1973 TV movie upon which it’s based.  That semi-class at least benefitted from the creatures' three-dimensional masks that you could actually get a good look at once in a while.
