The Avengers

Joss Whedon – 2012 – USA

It’s big.  It’s loud.  It’s The Avengers!  Since a couple different friends gushed like schoolgirls about this being the greatest movie in history, naturally I was frantic to see it (as soon as it came out on DVD).  Marvel Comics’ gallery of superheroes – Iron Man, the Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow – all join forces to help defeat Thor’s evil half-brother Loki from that planet they came from.  Inevitably, it’s a little cluttered with all these characters, but thankfully director Joss Whedon keeps things moving without turning the movie into a grueling three-hour extravaganza.  As in all these recent Marvel movies, there’s a nice give-and-take between action and humor, all grounded by a genuine respect for the comic characters on the part of the filmmakers.  Like his colleague J.J. Abrahms, (and their father Steven Spielberg), Whedon straddles a fine line between skillful showmanship and crass, cynical manipulation.  It’s the kind of style that can be great if it catches you in a good mood, but otherwise is a little like eating candy for dinner; might be pleasing for a few minutes, but ultimately doesn’t really nourish you.  But I’m just being a party-pooper.  Bottom line: if you like superheroes at all, you will most likely love this movie.
