Unlawful Entry

Jonathan Kaplan – 1992 – USA

Unlawful Entry came at the tail end of the “yuppie domestic nightmare” cycle kick-started by Fatal Attraction (1987), in which either co-workers, kids, neighbors, babysitters or whoever you think you can trust turn out to be psychos.  After a while, the genre waned in popularity in theaters but found a permanent home on the Lifetime channel.  After a scary break-in one night, well-to-do couple Kurt Russell and Madeleine Stowe decide to accept the advice of friendly neighborhood cop Ray Liotta and install a security system.  Some issues about class differences are relevant, but mostly the film remains focused on deranged Liotta terrorizing the couple.  Liotta is so crazed from the outset that it’s unclear how he functioned in life before this or what his main priority is; does he really want the wife for himself, or does he just resent rich people?  All these movies are kind of fun because they tap into deep-seated fears, but they’re also really cynical; the message is basically that you can trust no one.
