Valeri Milev –
2014 – USA
No news here. Pretty crappy
entry in the ever-worsening horror franchise.
The original film, 2003’s Wrong
Turn, wasn’t notably good, original or popular in the first place, so I
continue to be confused by the legs that this series has grown. Promoting the sensitive message that the
mentally and physically afflicted should be feared as freakish savages, the
films tells the adventures of a trio of inbred hillbilly brothers covered in
make-up appliances so cumbersome that they can imply emotions no subtler than
maniacal hysteria. Despite being
retarded in a way that’s supposed to be comical, the boys also manage – in film
after film – to evade capture while crafting more and more outlandish tortures
for their victims; some of whom are also devoured, and all of whom are jaded
city-folk who make the mistake of traveling anywhere near the Appalachian
region. This one has something to do
with a distant relation coming to town because he inherited a creepy old
hotel. Nothing much to recommend
it. As with most of these kinds of
movies, it can’t make up its mind if it’s trying to be wacky or scary, and
therefore fails at both.
