Rubber

Quentin Dupieux – 2010 – France

Set in the American southwest, an abandoned car tire comes to life in the desert and embarks on a seemingly arbitrary killing spree, endowed with an unexplained Scanners-like power to telepathically cause small animals and human heads to explode.  Quentin Dupieux’s tone is consistently absurd while negotiating thin lines between horror, comedy and social commentary. A narrative-breaking framing device is used but feels somewhat unnecessary; it essentially functions as a way of instructing the audience about the film’s themes instead of trusting us to get it ourselves. In this way, it sort of works it spite of itself. Getting past all of the explicit philosophizing, it is nevertheless possible to simply enjoy the film as the crazed, eccentric, unique work that it is.
