If you ever want to see why the studio system crumbled,
check out any ten-minute section of Lady in Cement. The lazy,
old-fashioned, offensive humor and the lazy, bored demeanor of the actors,
taking their lead from star Frank Sinatra, combine for a thoroughly unpleasant
experience. Hack director Gordon Douglas seems to have been content to take a
nap while making his crew select the shots and “direct” the actors. Flatly
shot, dully performed, the film embodies everything bloated, embarrassing and
out-of-touch about 1960s Hollywood.
