Diplomatic Courier

Henry Hathaway – 1952 – USA

Enjoyable WWII espionage thriller from director Henry Hathaway. With Carol Reed’s The Man Between, Diplomatic Courier is probably one of the last of its kind, meaning the whole subgenre of black-and-white noir-infused spy stories, of the type written by Eric Ambler, that were prominent in the 40s and early 50s. Tyrone Power plays a green attaché officer who gets roped into a mystery when his contact is killed in Salzburg before they can exchange some top-secret information. The action is surprisingly hard-hitting. Hildegard Neff and Patricia Neal play dueling temptresses with dubious interests in the matter and in Power. Watch for future Dirty Dozen costars Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin in bit parts.
