Joseph Sarno - 1965 - USA
Easily one of the worst films I’ve ever seen, shamefully amateurish but not in an endearing Ed Wood or Doris Wishman kind of way. Joseph Sarno was capable of far better, before and after this. Was he sick this day? Did he decide to let his nephew shoot the film? Is there anything worse than forced comedy staged by people who are painfully unfunny? The whole thing is photographed in one decorated room, even though it’s all supposed to take place in the woods. There’s nothing wrong with that. During the same time, in the same city, George Kuchar and Andy Warhol were doing the same thing. The difference is that they made the decor in their films – even if it’s a brick wall or merely lamps covered with colored scarves – homogenous with the stories, tone and overall aesthetic. This horrible movie just looks like a smarmy and talentless vaudeville troupe dreamed up a show and filmed it all in the same day.
