Love in the Afternoon

Billy Wilder - 1957 - USA

  • The beginning of Wilder's long writing partnership with I.A.L Diamond, which lasted into the 80s and gave us masterpieces like Some Like it Hot (1959), The Apartment (1960) and One, Two, Three (1961).
  • A diffused glow covers the film, presumably symbolizing the misty vision of romance.
  • Despite claiming to be an economical, non-arty director, Wilder creates innumerable beautiful shots and striking compositions.
  • The theme of surveillance recurs throughout, as do the motifs of water, mirrors, windows and reflections.
