The Fortune Cookie

Billy Wilder - 1966 - USA

  • Noir comedy; (as distinguished from 'black comedy').  If such a genre could exist, possibly only Billy Wilder could do it, and he only did it this once.
  • One of the last original black-and-white Panavision/CinemaScope films, a gorgeous format mainly only seen in some early 60s movies.
  • Quintessential Billy Wilder; icy cynicism paving the way for heartrending pathos.  Unlike most Hollywood movies, it's a poignancy that pays off so well because it is truly earned.
  • First of many pairings of Jack Lemmon and Walter Mathau; only twice more for Wilder.
