Filmed in Inverness and surrounding locations
in California, as John Carpenter had done for The Fog, his remake of
1960’s Village of the Damned is successfully atmospheric and disquieting
in a subdued and dreamy way. The entire first half of the film deals with an
isolated community coming to terms with the strange, apparently
extraterrestrial incident that has resulted in many of the women in town
becoming inexplicably pregnant on the same day. Carpenter took pains to explore
aspects of the premise that the original couldn’t, in particular how the women
involved feel about their sudden miracle pregnancies. Peter Jason stands out in
an almost wordless role as one of the women’s husbands, who has just returned
from a long trip and is mortified over his wife’s condition since he knows that
he cannot be the father. The second half is a bit less effective, focusing on
Christophe Reeve figuring out how to outsmart the creepy, psychic kids
from outer space.
